In much the same way as his hero and fellow Monaco master Ayrton Senna, Lewis Hamilton has claimed that God was on his side during his victory in the Monaco Grand Prix last Sunday.
The McLaren-Mercedes star triumphed in the most glamorous and prestigious race on the Formula 1 calendar, after overcoming an early brush with the Principality's unforgiving barriers that left him with a punctured tyre to battle his way back and see off the challenges of BMW-Sauber's Robert Kubica and pole-sitter and early race leader Felipe Massa in the Ferrari.
The result has moved Hamilton back to the top of the drivers' standings for the first time since the season-opening race in Australia, three points clear of defending world champion Kimi Raikkonen and four ahead of Massa, and now equal on victories with the pair of them with two apiece from the opening six races.
The 23-year-old also revealed how
his father Anthony had had a premonition that he would win, after keeping his superb record around tight, twisty street circuits firmly intact.
“He [Anthony] came up to me on the grid and said ‘this is your race',” Hamilton told the Daily Mirror, reflecting on his remarkable success. “He was right. He never usually says that.
“God was with me. I needed everyone's support and I had that in the race.”Now looking forwards, the next goal on the Stevenage-born ace's tick-list is victory in front of his adoring home fans at Silverstone, after producing a sublime lap to steal pole position from underneath his rivals' noses last year, only to fade away to third place during the race. Well, that and the small matter of the world championship of course.
“Winning at Silverstone is going to be the next one,” he asserted, “and then the world championship.
“I've been coming on strong since Barcelona. Turkey was strong, [and] Monaco too. We want to continue these performances, but we'll have to wait to see in Montreal.
